Fats, Cholesterol, and Health
Many people believe that all kinds of fats are bad for your health. Fats like saturated fats, unsaturated fats, and trans fats are all found in food. Saturated fats are considered the "unhealthy fat". Saturated fats store energy and build up cell membranes. Examples of saturated fats are dark chocolate, cheese and coconut. Unsaturated fats are fats taken from plants and animals. These fats are considered the "healthy fat". Examples of unsaturated fats are avocados, peanuts and canola oil. Trans fats are considered the "very bad fats" that contribute to heart disease. Examples of trans fats are butter, Ramen noodles, soup and fast food.
An increase in saturated and trans fats in your diet can result to an increase in LDL and a decrease in HDL. LDL is responsible for building up cholesterol and clogging the arteries in the heart which can cause heart diseases like heart attacks. HDL is responsible for carrying cholesterol from the arteries to the liver. An increase in saturated and trans fats can also harm your health.
